Yet another question... (most of which already answered on THG)
I plan to play games on my new PC when its built, as Ive missed out on many years of good PC games (main reason for buying new PC).
I plan to get Vista as I dont want to spend more money on buying XP first and then ungrading when Vista becomes better optimised of XP based games.
But I read on THG that vista is terrible with XP games at the moment and also that divers for my desired 8800GTS are dodgy at the moment.
So would it be worth waiting untill Vista games are straightend out before getting it, or will most XP based games be able to only just surfice untill new patch and drivers appear? I plan to only play games at 1280x1024 using 8800GTS so will that produce passable performance?
As you've read most of the issues are driver related. However, if you're getting new hardware I doubt that you'll have many issues. I have had no problem with Vista on the few games that I play.
i would wait --- if you want the best of what is available now --- xp is the choice --- in the future ---- i really dont know yet --- lot of questions in my mind.
New hardware? Vista is the obvious choice. Just check the manufacturer sites to make sure you have the most up-to-date drivers. It makes no sense to purchase 2 OS for a single PC if you know you'll upgrade.
If you're getting new hardware, then you won't even notice any of the supposed performance problems of Vista versus XP. i.e., do you really care that game Such-n-Such only gets 114 frames per second in Vista but can get 120 in XP? You won't see the difference.
I have Vista (64-bit, no less) with an 8800GTX and have had only one gaming issue: Dark Messiah Might & Magic crashes when loading the second level. I've heard it runs under 32-bit. All other games I've tossed at it, to at least see how they look/run: Rainbox Six Vegas, Company of Heroes, Oblivion, Tomb Raider Legend, BF2, Prey... look and perform perfectly on max settings.
I don't really have much of a gripe with nVidia; their driver runs fine for me. Now Creative's audio drivers... that's a different story.
Hey --- everyone seems to be telling you to go to vista --- so who am I to argue --- dont think its the right choice --- but this is my opinion --- and i dont give it litlely, meaning that I believe in what I am saying as I would not choose right now vista to be my operating system --- and I love gaming --- but there are far greater minds at work here than mine ---- so who am i to argue.
