How does a P4 2.40 GHz compare in performance to an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 3800+? $90 WITH mobo @ Fry's today & 1GB DDR2 5300 for $50, hmmmmm ;)

The Athlon 64 X2 will slaughter the P4...

"Slaughter" eh?

Niiiiice ;)

$140 for a new computer? Hmmm :)

Definitely worth it...but I would get ddr2-800 memory instead, because amd likes the higher ram and the performance boost is noticeable.

How much of a % difference in performance would it make from 533 to 800?

I'm going to run mostly internet and old/low-gpu-intensive games. (Going to use onboard video till later down the line)

A good %5-10 faster, so I would definitly go with the ddr2-800 memory if I were you. If you live in the US then you can get a gig from newegg for around 80 bucks, and two gigs for around $130.

ARe you talking about a Socet 478 P4? The P4 631 can clock past 5ghz wit hgood cooling i've heard 8) Possible but not likely easy
The 631 is a 3GHz cpu, not 2.4GHz. I think he had a particular 2.4 in mind.
