i want to upgrade win2000 domain controller to windows server 2003
i also have additional domain controller can i run forestprep and domain
prep on additional domain controller if not if i run it on primary domain controller will these commands change anything on domain controller
which can create problem in existing AD structure in case if i dont
want to upgrade win2k server Ad.

Doing the upgrade should be fairly easy. The installer will walk you through but I can't say that the server will be as stable considering everything you're doing.

My advice would to remove the server from the domain, do a fresh install, reconfigure and let everything replicate back to it.

Otherwise, make sure you have full back ups and start the upgrade. Check out TechNet for other possible problems you may encounter.

I agree it is a much smoother process to start from scratch when migrating to 2003. That being said triple check your backups if you decide to migrate from AD2000 to AD2003.

I don't think you are going to need to run forest prep when upgrading to 2k3. You have already created the forest and domain, you are just upgrading the OS.
