New WinXP install and update... .net option

Hi all,

I'm installing WinXP (SP2) on a new machine, and after the installation I will Windows Update.

1) what is .net ? What features does it give me?

2) If I choose to instal .net I see three different versions, and each of them is fairly large. Do I need all three, or can I just choose the latest version (v3) ?

.Net is required by some applications to run. If an application needs it it will usually install .Net if you don't have it.

I wouldn't bother installing it unless you have a specific need. XP will tell you if it needs it.
