How is everyone connecting power to the 8800? It come with a "Y" cable that connects to PCI-e connector on the card. The other end is a pair of "standard " power connectors used for CD/DVD drives etc.

My power supply is a modular supply and has a dedicated cable for PCIe. I'm guessing that this is the better approach and not use the cable supplied with the card. The power supply is a Hiper 580W modular supply.

Yep.
Use the cable that comes from your power supply. The Y cable that comes with the card is used in case you don't have the pci-e power connectors on your PSU.
