Is RAID0+1 faster than a 3 drive RAID5 for the OS partition?

Let's assume a software controller, like the ICH8R and Seagate 7200.10s.

RAID 5 has no place on the desktop, and with a software controller it will be even worse. Go RAID 0+1, or what I would personally recommend doing is RAID 0 for boot and keep the extra drives as storage/backups, there are many benefits to doing it that way.

I agree, I've always bought dedicated scsi controllers and disabled the onboard for servers because they don't perform that well.
