Quaddrature amplitude modulation, QAM is the method that cable companys have
encoded HD onto cable. IF your Set Top Box supports QAM you can receive
unscrambled HD off cable.

QAM is the modulation technique used on digital cable, so it should
mean the unit is capable of receiving any unscrambled signals direcly
from the cable.

I hooked my LG LST3510 up to Charter's cable with digital tier
service. I got fewer stations in HD than I get OTA here in Ft. Worth.
Needless to say, I'm very disappointed in Charter Cablevision.

QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) has been known and used for many
years, most notably used to send the color information in an analog
color TV set (with some modifications). The QAM method is basically the
same weather the data is digital or analog. If the application is
digital then digital data is applied at the source and decoded at the
receiver, likewise if the application is analog then analog data is
processed at both ends. QAM provides the benefit of doubling the data
rate as compared with simple amplitude modulation (like in AM radio).

Mike:

I also received my new Samsung T-451 Digital Receiver ($250+ship)

7 days ago & hooked it up (one at a time) to my OTA

antenna & my TW Cable line..... It replaces mt Samsung T-151..

For OTA use it locks in on my 7 Digital/HD TV stations faster

or in the same time...It locks in on my ABC-HD Chan 23 (full Power)

Very fast where the T-151 waited up to 40 sec for a lock....

As for the QAM Cable channels, 451 works slowly & inconsistently...

The QAM options are: Standard, IRC (Incrementally Relater Carrier), &

HRC (Harmonically Related Carrier)....

Standard & IRC QAM Digital/HD channels run from 80 thru 125

and are very close to the same frequencies... Do a Google

on "Cable STD IRC HRC" and the tech features can be read....

THe 3 cable scans from Chan 1 to Chan 125 on the 3 modes

takes about 12 minutes total... including tons of Subchannels.

All my HD/Dig unencrypted channels lie from Chan 80 thru 123

for the STD & IRC option.... HRC seems dead???

I found 1 HD local Chan for QAM (1 out of 6 expected) &

(8 out of 12 expected) Digital SD channels....

DEleting the many, many QAM Sub channels was a real T-451

pain that I never successfully finished....

THis one hour T-451/ Cable session I better not ever get

rid of my SA3250HD QAM Cable set top box.....

If I had a cheat sheet from a local QAM expert....

who knew where the LOcal QAM HD stations were hidden..

I might try these HD station for Quality Pic study...

The T-451 will not pick up any QAM Analog channels nor

QAM encrypted Digital Stations.. That leaves few to view!!

It looks like the T-451 QAM feature is one step below Cable Card.
