How important are they? Currently I have a case without a system fan, iI'm interested how much will one lower my system and cpu temperatures. Will it cool less or more than if i just had one side of the case open?

You want to maintain a a balance of intake and exhaust. If the balance is off then it should be more exhaust then intake.

But that SUCKS!

I can put 4 fans on the side and 3 fans on the front.
I can only put 1 fan on the back and 1 on the top.

What are your system specs? What fans do you have in the rig now? What are your current temps and are you having stability issues? We need more info to be able to help you out. BTW, you can change a fan from intake to exhaust by turning it around...

its not a matter of how many fans there are. its a matter of how much airflow is going in/out.

BTW - there are advantages and disadvantages to all 3 types of case pressure (positive, negative, equal), none of which have been proven to be "the best". its one of those debates that will never die.

edit: oh yea, and dont forget that the PSU works as an exhaust point too.
