Hi,

I have a hp pavilion model having windows XP home. Since few days I have problem while initial start up. I get the message

PXE-E53 No Boot file name found followed by error message - No operating sysyem found.

If I switch on and off several times the notebook starts normally with Windows XP. After it is on there is no problem afterwards. But I have this problem always when the notebook is switched off for some hours.

My notebook was never on network. It is a standalone notebook. I am not a very tech person. But I tried to test my hard drive. E-diagnostc tools says hdd is working fine.

I tried changing the boot order to floppy, cd-drive and the hard drive. Then also no luck.

I have reinstalled the system with both the Windows Xp Cd and hp recovery cd provided with the system. The error still persists.

I tried to use fixmbr but for the I needed admn password in Recover console. I haven't set any pssd so was not able to do anything.

I also tried to use the method to fix registry by using :

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DHCPServer\Parameters subkey

But there was no folder as DHCPserver when i went into regedit. Only DHCP was there.

What else I could do so as to resolve this problem. Because once started this notebook works perfectly. It is only the initial start which is giving me problems.

Thanks for all your help

You need to disable PXE boot option in the BIOS.

If you tell me the exact model number of your PC I could give you more detail but shouldbe fairly easy to spot ...

Hello,

Thanks for your help. My exact model number is : HP Pavilion ze5185.

I checked the boot order in Bios -

IT gave only 4 options :

HDD
Floppy Drive
CD-Rom
Lan Card

THanks

Make sure the boot order is:

Floppy Drive
CD-Rom
HDD
Lan Card

If that doesn't work you could try setting the BIOS options back to the default ... (look in the Exit menu)

I have tried that also. After changing to the boot order, it works for that time only. After that all the starts crop up the same Operating system not found error.

Thanks
