On my windows xp home edition computer i have a cross over cable between my computer and my Xbox. My computer is receiving wireless internet from the main computer downstairs. i have always been able to get on XBOX live (internet on the Xbox) VIA the cross over cable. BUt my computers LAN connection at first said little to no connection, and after i put in the IP address and other stuff VIA TCP/ip protocol properties manually it just says acquiring network address and never connects. What can i do????

You will get that error if the IP addy conflicts (i.e. is the same as the xbox IP). Could be about anything else too. Is the IP unique, yet on the same subnet as xbox? If that's greek, just post what you entered on both boxes.

i entered

IP ADDRESS: 192 168 2 43

SUBNET MASK: 255 255 255 0

DEFAULT GATEWAY: 192 168 2 1

PREFERRED DNS SERVER: 68 57 32 5

ALTERNATE DNS SERVER: 68 57 32 6

THAT IS What i put under the LAN for TCP/IP connection properties. on my xbox i have configure automatically. EVEN WHEN i entered the IP's in manually it connected BUT my xbox said something about not receiving DNS server info, or something like that. thats the way it was when it worked. but like i said it all of a sudden stopped.

OK, on your LAN means what you entered on the PC, the XP machine, you entered:

P ADDRESS: 192 168 2 43

SUBNET MASK: 255 255 255 0

DEFAULT GATEWAY: 192 168 2 1

PREFERRED DNS SERVER: 68 57 32 5

ALTERNATE DNS SERVER: 68 57 32 6

If so try the same on xbox, manually entered, but change IP to:

192 168 2 44

Then cross your fingers :)

I DONT EVEN know if any of that stuff is right. but i tried what you said and i got an error message on my XBOX saying the network gateway couldnt be reached. verify the ip addresses match the settings provided by your ISP. I DONT KNOW IF THE DNS's are right along with the gateway address. WHEN ID DONT GO TO IP PROPERTIES UNDER MY LAN CONNECTION AND PUT STUFF IN IT DOESNT EVEN SAY ITS CONNECTED. IT SAYS "LITTLE TO NO CONNECTIVITY".

with just:

P ADDRESS: 192 168 2 43

SUBNET MASK: 255 255 255 0

on one

and

P ADDRESS: 192 168 2 44

SUBNET MASK: 255 255 255 0

on the other

Regardless of other TCP/IP settings

You should be able to do (from the xp box)

start
run
cmd

at the c:\

ping 192.168.2.43

or

ping 192.168.2.44

and get a response similar to

http://2guyz.info/2g/UJ/temp/good.jpg

not

http://2guyz.info/2g/UJ/temp/bad.jpg

also please, while at c:\ please try "ipconfig /all"

and reportz just IP address, mask and gateway

THE PING TEST checked out and it worked. but when i enter my IP in manually on my xbox i cant leave gateway empty. i have to put an address for it. and when i do IPconfig /all it doesnt give me the ip for my gateway for LAN. its just blank.

Gateway for the xbox will be 192.168.2.1
