Hi,

Could someone explain how WD name their HDD ?
What is the meanning of each letter
for example : WD3200AAKS

WD = (obvious) western digital

320 = 320 gig

0 = ???
AA=???
K=???
S=????

They also have : the JS, YS ??

Straight from the horses mouth.

The second image on this page gives the breakdown of their product line by category. There is more to it but this is a good starting point.

YS is Enterprise class. Usually louder as noise dampening isnt a concern.

Others differentiate between noise dampening, 8mb cache vs 16mb cache, single platter vs multi platter, MTBF ratings, TCQ, NCQ, etc, etc...

Its not the clearest naming scheme by any means.
