SP2 problem

I'm doing a bit of maintainence on a friends PC and noticed it didnt have Sp2 installed, so I downloaded and installed it. On restarting, after the update was complete, Windows wouldn't load up properly. It gets through the loading bar Xp screen but once that finishes, the screen remains black. The only way I could get XP running again was to system restore to a pre-sp2 save point.

I even tried doing a fresh install with a sp2 slipstreamed installation CD but same thing happens, so from this I presume there is something in the hardware setup of the PC that sp2 doesn't like.

The system is running XP Pro, with PIII 800, 256mb, a Gigabyte GA-6CXC mobo, aureal vortex 2, ATI 128 Rage Pro and a 40Gb Maxtor.

I know it's an old system but its more than capable of web browsing and playing online poker, which is all it's really used for.
If anyone could suggest any possible remedies for this, I'd be grateful :)

You could try updating the drivers. Failing that try a reinstall.

Also considering that the PC is used from web surfing and online poker, Linux could be a viable option in your case.
