Some people who use Vista say the interface works so much better than XP and they are very happy with it. Well, I am hapy for them too but I wonder if these people who say this grew up with Dos.
Why I ask this? Dos had a very nice development when it comes to file managers. Anyone who was really into MSdos back in the old days remembers Norton Commander and Dos Navigator. These programs really made computing like heaven.
Nowadays it still seems unbeatable for the people who know it. Total Commander, Speed Commander, Free commander ( this name says it all...it's free). You think what is he mumbling about? Well, it's exactly this....when I used windows 98 and Windows XP...it did not make a single difference at how I browsed trought my files. It went both very very fast.......for example if I wanted to copy one file from one directory (map) to another directory I just went very easely to the file select it press F5 and it was done.
My question to Vista users is.....you like this search engine so much over XP....have you guys ever used programs like the onces I just described (total commander etc)? If you don't I think that if you might give it a little run you will think different about the whole setup of windows explorer and how slow it really is. In fact I think you would not look anymore at how fast the interface is build to manage your files because you can do it way faster anyhow. It does take some little time to get used to the keys you need to press but it are just some F keys like F5 copy F6 move F7 make directory (map)....instead of clicking like hell to get one file to another map withing either XP or Vista.Finding a file or text in Total Commander for example is easy....just press Alt-F7 and you're there.
So, my question is.....are there allready Vista users out there using these kind of file managers that makes Vista/XP/Win98 etc a lot faster when it comes to file management?

SyPh,

You have already admitted that you don't like Vista and have no intention of ever using it. You are only here to start flame-wars and not for any other reason. Take your question to the XP group and ask them.

Oh here comes smart kiddy joke again telling people they are flamers and what they should do. If this is all you do in this forum you might as well take a gun and kill yourself as you are irritating a lot of people. People dont find you funny believe me. So if you want to be a saddistic dumbass.....go ahead and keep making a fool out of yourself. Like I (we) care :)

Joke (Vista lover joker) you are one of the few here who always try to start flame wars (while trying to make people take the bait) at this forum so why don't you just talk to some donkey in the wide open nature (as it is more at your level) instead of teaching people nothing and only tell them what is wrong and right without teaching any knowledge.
So what this post is about is.....I like to know if Vista users also know about faster file management. There is nothing wrong with this so you dont have to judge me for this as it has nothing to with me not liking Vista as maybe I will use it too later when DRM is taken care off. So please go find some other guy who you can joke around with as you are as usuall full of it.

ps: I wonder when you ever gonna post something usefull yourself instead of always telling people what to do like a little baby. People get bored very quickly reading your noncence responces like this. Am I flaming? No, you failed into getting me flaming. I'm sorry. So back from useless noncence replies...any Vista users here using a file manager?

Didn't file managers die after DOS / Win 3.1?

They only died for the users who did not know or understand how to use them. :) The smart people still use them as they don't like all the mouse clicking and RSI (I hope you will never get this as it really sucks). I wanna bet I can copy/move/view/edit/extract/pack files way faster than anyone who is using the Vista/XP/2000/98 etc explorer interface mouse clicking him/herself insane to get something done.

There are keyboard shortcuts for Windows Explorer as well. Granted, they are not necessarily singular keys, but hitting Crtl-A to select all files isn't any harder than hitting a Function key. Windows Explorer users are in no way bound to the mouse... most just prefer to do it that way.

Yup, it's just a matter of taste....I totally agree.

I still use command lines and short cuts over the mouse a lot.

But, its only effective if you can type fast. Majority of users can't type fast.. 30-40 wpm if that. The mouse is faster for the everyday user.

I used to type in the 115-120 range, now I'm sitting around 90-100 which is sufficient for me.

Even after some time of this main post, whether it is 9x, XP, Vista or any other win-X system, if you're not using "Total Commander" to drive windows, it is just as bad as a combat team without their commander: what can they do? a whole lot of a mess, I'd say!!! :D

hi guys,

glad to see other's use total commander too...

anyway, i won't bore those in the know why i can't use a windows machine without it...

but i have a question: Again, this is for those who use Total Commander:

Problem:

Copying and Delete large number of files via Total Commander is very slow on my new notebook. I cancelled it and deleted the folder in explorer (Vista 32bit) and it went like really fast...

Setup:

Dell Dual Core, 2GB, 120gb DDR2, 120gb, single partition...
Vista 32bit Total Commander 7.04a

What I think I know (Please correct me if I'm worng)

1. Haven't had a problem like this with the same version of TC when used on my PC (XP Pro SP3, 2gb) so I don't think it's the hardware...

2. There was a suggestion that I config TCC to not calculate the size of the folders to be deleted/copies but that's not the problem... the slowness was during the deleting or copying..

3. There was a suggestion that it might be with the way windows copy the files in the recycle bin but again, this was already present with I copy/delete files on my XP.

So anyway, I think my question really is there something in Total Commander that has not been updated whatever that it will make it perform as it did/does with my XP machine?

(for the conspiracy theorists out there, i'm not associated with the developers of Total Commander... and I... well maybe no love, but I certainly not against Windows.. XP or Vista...)

I have used every version of MS product since DOS 3 and have seen all sorts of file managers. I think some of them were handy as they had 2 panes and some had better menus.
Now I just open 2 instances of WExplorer to help keep track of where I am and drag and drop from there.
No typing or remembering long file paths.
No searching for a lost file because I typed the wrong path.
No trying to remember switches to tune the output of my commands.
No additional programs to miss when I goto another computer.

Working from "my computer" is awful Ill admit but WExplorer does all I need 95% of the time and I can configure it to display any info on any file that i need it to.
I dont work well with pictures and prefer details and the ability to use selective or global file selection to interface with files is all there by just holding either control or shift.
How much easier could it be?

I am with you Pat. I have every MS OS since Dos 3 and have had relatively good luck with each file manager. Of all of them, I think I like the performance of the Vista one the least, but it still works. I have even used some from linux and unix distros.

Well, as a long time user of TC and of which case did come across something like you say, even
though I did not take much importance to the problem, I could only suggest it may be something
with the TC installation.

Try the same copy/delete procedure on another machine/setup (with vista).
Try the same copy/delete procedure from another location (partition, drive).
Try installing TC right after you've installed windows, before any other software -seems most
optimum stage to do it.

If you figure out something, please lets us know.

Just a comment of support for the author of the main post: All the way from Norton commander, Volcow commander, and in recent years Total Commander, I don't think I'll ever like any file manager more than those programs.

Even now, when I sit behind friend computer and open Explorer, and want to open new folder I hit 'F7', remembering ... Oh man, this is not Total commander.

Vista Explorer is OK, but anyone who tried Total commander will know how convenient it is
