Hi there,

I'm going to be buying a HD plasma pretty soon. The HD feed will be
delivered via a HD DVR box provided by my cable company. I also have a
progressive-scan DVD player that I'll want to use with the plasma. Since
this is for a guest room, I won't be setting up 5.1 surround sound. There
are left and right speakers built into the TV and I will be using those
instead.

Here's the issue: The TV that I'm considering purchasing contains only
one component input, but after reading this newsgroup I think that I really
need *two* component inputs: 1 for the cable box, and 1 for the DVD. Or do I
? I was thinking... couldn't I just plug the cable cord output from the
cable box into the cable cord *input* of the plasma? Presumably this cord
would contain BOTH the video and sound information which the TV could make
use of. I realize that the signal would only come across properly on
"Channel 3" but I can live with that. Would this work? If so, that would
mean that I could use the spare component input for the DVD...

I just wanted to run this scenario by you guys because I wasn't sure if
it's possible to get a HDTV picture to display on the television via a cable
cord instead of the traditional component video cords. In theory, it seems
like it SHOULD work, since both video and sound are traveling over that
cord -- but I don't want to find out that I'm wrong AFTER I make the plasma
purchase. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Lamont

What you need is an A/V receiver with multiple component/DVI/HDMI inputs
and 1 HD monitor output.

Cable as in a coaxial cable? Not if you want HDTV - you'll need a component
or DVI connection for HD.

Thanks for the response...

Yes, I believe coaxial cable is the cord I'm referring to -- the thick
cable with the single metal pin on the end. What would be the point of the
coaxial cable *output* on the HD cable box I wonder? Perhaps I don't even
need to use it.

It allows you to feed the coaxial signal to other devices - such as a VCR,
another cable box, or another TV. If you connect a device to the coaxial
out, it will probably output a standard definition - not high definition -
signal (at least a good cable box will).

NOT if the set has a built in tuner thats hi-def capable
Most such sets are also able to get cable signals.
Which just shows just how confusing this stuff is getting
