I'm assuming you use WMP? That makes 720p lag on my machine and I have a fast enough rig.

To get smooth playback I use WMP Classic and CoreAVC codec to playback MPEG-4 videos (H264) which uses less CPU. You have to pay for CoreAVC, unless you know where to look , so I'd suggest trying WMP Classic first and tell me if it's any better.

What HD video types are you playing? If it's not MPEG-4 then you don't need CoreAVC.

Your spec seems pretty good. Even with a 64bit graphics card I still managed to play 720p smoothly with CoreAVC instead of ffdshow. Do you know what codec is playing your files?

It is possible that CoreAVC might help.

The only thing that is probably slowing you down is the 512mb ram. When I upgraded to 1gb I noticed a lot of difference in games and applications.
