Here is my build. I spent a lot of time trying to decide what ram is best for the s3 but nothing seemed concrete, so I just went with these because they were cheap and had CAS of 4. Give me some feedback on the build, especially the ram and HD (People seemed to like the samsung?). Also that Hiper PSU got a good review and was added to the reference list recently, its nice and cheap too. This is my first ever build so let me know your thoughts. Thanks

Tom

on a side note... how do you install windows to a new sata drive if your computer doesn't have a floppy drive?

ok, the case is not sexy, it is a solid case that works well, unless you go for the black ones
This one is sexy

so with the xp cd booted how can i install xp on my HD if the sata drivers can't be loaded from a floppy? sorry im a little dense about this.

normally, XP detects SATA drives as standard IDE ones at install - what it needs are drivers for SATA RAID arrays, and this is obviously not the case.

I installed Windows 2000 on SATA disks without any problems, so you shouldn't have trouble either - provided you didn't go and create a SATA RAID array.

Otherwise, you need to integrate the driver on the Windows install CD, see nLite for details - and a method to do it without endlessly editing obscure text files and wasting CD coasters testing your latest install CD remaster.

hmm okay i hope thats the case but from my experience everytime i booted from the cd with my old computer it wouldn't detect my HD's unless i had preloaded the sata/raid driver from the floppy. anyway I hope its different this time around. any comments, I choose the new intel cpu because it has more cache, but besides that its the same as the 6400? anyone have any ram suggestions, or general suggestions?

All of the parts are really good. When you are ready to push the buy button, look for the best price on RAM, I think there is a lower priced set of G.Skill, but things change daily in the memory market.

The memory you chose is fine.

Yes you should buy a CPU cooler if you O/Cing more than 10%

In general I like your specs. I would buy the DFI Infinity 965 or 975 mother board for a little more $15-$25 because the manufacture build it for overclocking and the DFI Club fourms will help you if you have trouble.

I would also recomend the Lite-on Retail DVD-RW Drive. The OEM Drive wont have the proper Software to make DVD's or watch movies. For an extra $10 you get them in the retail package. I believe I paid $38 for the last one I purchaced.

Try and get G.Skills HZ DIMMS.

It's a good build, but not sexy. As for why, b/c I didn't build it. :p

The only reason you would need to have the floppy to boot windows is if you have an old version of xp. I had this happen to me with my new computer. I had to load sp2 on a flash drive and get it in that way.

I think if you are using a version of windows that is newer... you will be fine without having to do anything. My version was one of the first released pre sp1.

Hope it goes smooth.... the computer looks pretty nice. I would get one if I didn't just buy a laptop.
