I am unbelievably tempted to build a new PC for my parents.

Well,

I have really been planning on going Intel and building a quad, but, the damn AMD cpu's are getting so damn cheap, that I might just go with AMD. $59 for a dual core chip is insane(not to include the netburst garbage, they aren't worth $59  ).

I am curious as to how much lower they are going to go before K_ _ comes out.

I think its time to build an AMD test bed.

With RAM prices dropping like they are, it wouldn't be that bad on the wallet.

That's amazingly cheap!

Reply to djgandy

That is an awesome price! Hard to beat that price for performance since those OC to 2.8 GHz!!!

* cuts wires * now yer can get back ere!!

if only it was $59 in AU dollars hahaha ><,,,,

awwww :(

Wow. 8O

I REALLY want that proc, alas, this time I'm going to buy everything at once, no more slowly peicing together a PC, seeing those parts sit in their cardboard boxes, week after week, knowing I can do anything with them until I get that final peice of the puzzle that is a computer. AHHHH!!! I WNAT IT!!!!

Reply to apt403

I didnt put 'em there, I swear! It was the manufacturers that did it!

Oh, except for that brief time I had my pc in a cardboard box, that was my doing.

My Opty serves me well... but I want one of those sooooo bad.

Reply to akahuddy

Of course I did, it wouldn't have been worth it otherwise. It's kind of funny, this X2 is only SLIGHTLY more than the Sempron was without the rebate.....
Funny thing is, I still haven't used it 8O . Ever since I bought it I have been keeping an eye out for a good deal on a quad kentsfield, but they are still a little pricey for my taste.

Have you used your at all yet?

Is it possible to manufacture the chip for $40?

Kinda ticks me off in a way. It is almost half the price of what I paid for it back in Feb. At least now I can build systems ever cheaper for those that want really cheap systems but want dual core.

I see in your signature that you overclocked your 2x 3600. Could you share some details about that? How hot is it and what voltage is it running at, for example?

OC AMD is easy.
On stock volts I can get my Optron 146 (2Ghz out of the box) to do 3Ghz but prefer to run it at 1:1 with G.Skill 4000HZ set to 260Mhz (DDR-520) and stock 3.4.4.8 T1 for 2.6Ghz....Everest shows this to be faster Read/Write/Copy than DDR2-800 ram.

With my Coolermaster case and Thermalright SI-120 cooler it runs only 2C above the rooms air temps.

Whoa, that's cheap.

Too bad I have no interesting building a low end system right now.

How's that TForce 550? I'm considering it for my own Brisbane build.

Logainofhades, what type of thermal compound are you using? Did you lap the Arctic Cooling heatsink? My rig is almost identical to yours, but my CPU idles around 32C, and rises to ~42C under load. I would be nice to shave-off a few more degrees.

Right now it's running at 9.5 x 273 = 2.6GHz, with memory set at 533 and HTTx3, stock voltage. It was very easy to achieve this overclock, and I definitely want to push it to 2.8GHz for everyday use, but I kind of wanted to get the temp down a bit first. The AS-5 I used should be cured by now. I've run the system over 200hrs and turned it off several times to temp-cycle the thermal compound.

Well according to AMD dashboard it is about 25c on idle and depending on load I have seen it up in the low to mid 30's. I set the voltage to 1.4 in the bios, HTT is @4x, memory is set at ddr2 533, and cpu speed I set to 294. using and arctic cooling 64 freezer pro to keep it cool.

That´s quite a bargain then. DDR2 533 memory is cheap and the 3600 is cheap as well - even the arctic freezer is a steal.

Cool, sounds like the board for me.

I noticed that the 24 pin connector is right next to the socket. Did that give you any problems?

$10 more for a retail version with hsf and full warranty from AMD. Nice price that. :)
