I am having a bunch of friends over for a LAN party and have a question re hookup.

I have a Linksys 4 port etherfast router, and have a 12 port dlink hub connected to the uplink port. My question is whether the router will provide DHCP to all ports on the hub or if it will just assign one IP address to the hub. I have no problem with using static IPs, but would prefer DHCP if possible.

Any help would be great.

The best way to find out is to test your equipment first (always test before the night) however DHCP is a broadcast protocol, which means that any DHCP server on that "subnet" can respond, this includes your DHCP router. hubs and switches for the most part simply pass the data around the network without caring what the data is and does...

If it’s a 'normal' hub then all it will do is take a packet incoming on one port and relay it out to all ports, thus the DHCP packets should be passed out to all the computers. Just make sure no one is running a DHCP server on their computer, e.g. for ICS in XP.

the hub worked great..the only issue was when we hooked another router up to the hub, we were having a conflict between the two routers as to which one was the "proper" gateway. Fixed that and no problems....

Thanks to all who responded.
