I can get 7900GS cards from CompUsa for $150 each out the door no limit. Can I get a single $300 card that will match the 7900GS SLI performance? Any thoughts on this topic?

Unless it's the top graphic card, it's almost never worth it to go dual.

Yes. And unless you go with high resolutions, single still gives the best performance/price.
