Dell finally listened to the userbase and they're giving you the option of having Windows XP on your new computer instead of Vista.
I was surprised to see them take XP off so fast.. they didn't switch from 2000 to XP that fast.
At least now you can still stick with XP and skip the Vista OS.. I think they may include a Vista upgrade CD for you though which is probably a bad idea.
Anyhow, thought it was cool.. still haven't heard anything about them releasing a Linux distro yet.. 3 OS choices on Dell computers? Coming right up!
From what I've read, they are only doing that until the XP OS is de-supported for new OS problems by the end of this year by MS (they will continue to patch older problems). Considering that the Vista SP1 is not expected until the early summer of '08 (still having driver delay issues), I'm not sure if this will become an issue again or not next year.
I'd read that one of the reasons that Dell jumped so quickly to Vista was that MS aggressively priced the Vista licence, but increased the cost of the XP licence immediately upon Vista's release.
I've seen a huge discount in Vista for OEM.. its fairly cheap. I'm sure MS wants to push Vista. But that isn't what the users want.
Can't fault MS for marketing but to remove the option of XP sucked. If you were to purchase the Optiplex model, about $400 more, you could stick with XP.
