First off, thanks for taking the time out to look at this. Here's my problem:
I installed the 2005 upgrade from my HP media center 2004. It was working fine for about 2 weeks. Now all of a sudden my system is very sluggish, often freezing for about 2 seconds at a time. Also, when I try to open programs now (firefox / AIM / etc..) it takes over a minute for them to open (rather than a few seconds like it normally does). I've tried the following to fix this.
cleaned registry (CCleaner)
ran virus protector (Norton) (No viruses)
ran spyware programs (No spyware detected)
Installed all the latest windows updates
None of this helped. If anyone can help me fix this problem I'll be in your debt forever!
It probably isn't your registry but the other Windows services that are bogging you down. There are several websites on which Vista services are listed as useful and which aren't. I found on Ultimate that the indexing service was one of the slow-downs after a few weeks and was killing my CPU when I was loading/unloading mp3 and recorded tv programs. Now I'm fighting Windows Media Center not completing recordings in the middle of the night because, I think, some background service is hogging the CPU for a few minutes at some point in time and overwhelming the media service and forcing it to stop.
Thanks for the reply. I should have mentioned that I don't have Vista yet. I'm using windows XP media center 2005.
The media center portion works perfectly, no sluggishness or freezing when watching tv / recording TV / listening to music.
All the sluggishness/freezing comes when browsing the web / opening programs.
You probably want to move this thread to the appropriate forum area. When I had MCE 05, it had a lot of the same service issues, but users in that area will have more recent experiences with the issues than a Vista user would.
