OK, here's the insanly edited version, from about 2 pages long to a couple sentences.

$600 budget, and that's pushing it (the original number was $375).

I might go for a mild oc if I can find room in my budget for a decent hsf.

This pc is going to be running Linux and BSD, and I'm going to try every distro possible, so hardware support is important.

I'm getting 1gb of ram to start out with, then I'll upgrade to 2gb or 4gb (64bit Linux w00t!) in a couple months.

I know the case is way to expensive for such a budget oriented build, but I like it. I'm definitely open to cheaper suggestions though.

I need a semi-decent gfx card, since alot of distros can have some pretty gfx intensive effects (like the Cube plug-in for SUSE).

I know I could probably get a low-end C2D, but I already have a C2D based comuter, and I've wanted an AMD pc for a while.

What do you think?

3600+ Brisbane - $70
Biostar TForce 550 - $80
FSP Group AX450-PN - $58
Corsair XMS 1gb DDR2-800 - $66
Evga 7300gt - $70
NEC 7170A - $31
Western Digital 160gb HDD - $53
Antec P182 Gun Metal Black - $170

Total $598

Thanks

very nice build, I wanted to tell you to get the nVidia card as their Linux support whups brand "A"s but. I did something similiar to this trying a lot of flavors of Linux, until I got hooked on Runescape and WOW. Right now Ubuntu is #1 with most users but there are as many fanboys there as in the CPU war.

i know you guys know a lot more about computers than me but I do have two things to add:

1. why spend 1/3 of your budget on a case, it doesn't make sense when you could spend 50$ on a very nice case and have the rest of the $ to upgrade your parts

and 2. if you already have 3 computers and you don't have any specific need for a fourth why spend $600 to build another one?

regardless, good luck!

1. Yeah, I know. I really like the P182, but I'm probably going to change it to something a little cheaper. It would be kinda wierd to have a $600 pc will a better case then my $1500 one.

2. You can never have to many computers! :)

Bump again. I shortened the OP quite a bit.

Alcattle, you said you've tried a bunch of distros, any ones in particular I should install first?

I would start with Ubuntu. Very user friendly. You also should get a live disk like Knoppix. I think everyone should have that one, as it will rescue you many times. Fedora was growing nicely, go to dist-watcher? I think is the name, they list the top 10 and such.
