Being a stingy person, id really rather not blow 100 on oem vista/xp when it would seem possible to dl for free. however, ive heard about the pirated versions being full of rootkits and such and being shut down w.o proper activation code, & no win update. So, should i shut up and pay up or risk it?

Also have oem reinstall discs from 3 year old dells. Any way to get those to work?

i don know if i'd call it piracy... with that $100, maybe you feed your kids... i think u oughta do it. i meen, a $100 is a $100 bucks. right. so i agree just make sure the install don't go for no auto-update, either right after install or later - an your right (we think alike!), gotta be happy with the MR bits. also no sinse goin with no ultimate ether (bet you didnt think of that one   ), it wants to get those 'extras' stuffs an I'm sure that will nuke it to. u jus gotta be careful, very very careful.

i dont think they write down yor mac-addr, cerl num, or nothing else like that if they get you cheat'n (I, like you, think M$ just dont care) - dude do it! trust me, i sure u get away with it... really, worst that happens is M$ just turns off the OS on your computr first try to get updates or some other stupid M$ file an u just wind-up install some other stolen copy at 2am... that gets real boring (i no!) but i say, no big deal. kids gotta eat - right - that's moss important!

hope that helps

I think in the long run, it's not worth the hassle and frustrations. I was very fortunate in my case and was given Windows XP Professional 32-bit and 64-bit and Windows Vista Business, 32-bit for free by my college. The perks for being an IST student. 8)

But if I didn't get the OS for free, you better believe I would try to find the cheapest legit Vista I could get my hands on. I enjoy the latest Windows Updates and not having to worry about anything because the OS is pirated.

So my recommendation is don't go through all the hassle. Save yourself some grief and pay the few bucks up front. You'll enjoy your Vista experience in the long run.

it depends on your long term priority. Vista cost alot more than 100 squid in canada. In fact it cost nearly 500squid. Therefore piracy is inevitable since the public can't afford to spend that much hard earned cash on software that will be obsolete in 5yrs.

You'll spend $250 on a video card you'll upgrade in a year or two.
You'll sepnd $150 on a mobo you'll keep for a couple years.
You'll spend $60 on a computer game you'll play with 6-8 months and get bored with.

But the main piece of software your computer needs to run you'd think about pirating?

Ok, Windows 98, ME, even 2000.. sure. XP and above? Its too much hassle now to deal with pirating it.

Besides, back then it was big to pirate because everything was expensive. Now its not so bad considering a $200 video card isn't really expensive.. since they're reaching $600 these days.

Don't do it because your piracy costs honest consumers such as myself since there will be less innovation if creators aren't being recompensed for their work. Work harder instead.

Having to deal with clients that don't like paying 400 U$S for Vista ultimate, I obtained a pirate copy and it's the same as the original so far.

But I'm sure that SP1 will get some piracy detection and if you're not running the original Vista you won't be able to upgrade. Just like XP SP2.

Personally, I don't think pirating Vista is worth it. But hey, I don't think installing Vista in my PC is worth it too...

The OEM version 64bit cost me 132$ Canadian at Direct Canada. Witch it totally worth it, no worries about virus, trojan, spyware and the 64bit is highly secure to do anything. I even intentionally installed tons of spyware with no effect, the windows defender is pretty much doing is job, which you doesn't need to get a anti-virus. If i was not a gamer,i would had not pay for it and i would go on Ubuntu :P

I have to agree with Riser on this one... You are going to blow 3 times the amount of an OS on hardware over the next 3-5 years so why not just suck it up buy a legal version. You'll save yourself from future headaches.
Best of luck...

The only possible way that I would even consider a pirate version is if you are just using it to see what it is like, you won't keep it very long at all, and you are not connected to the Internet/other PCs (testing apps, etc). I'm contemplating it for Windows Home Server after I saw all the rave reviews after the last MS release - but it's only available to beta users, who are reporting it's extremely stable. I'll probably just end up waiting for it to release and get a copy from my company so I don't have to hassle with all of the associated problems.

Linux is free and it still manages only 1% market share. All those people working together still can't make an attractive product.

In the third world countries everything from OS to games or software or music is pirated. Even it is very hard to find the original one. Because it is impossible for people in these countries to afford the original one as it is too much expensive. No one even care because it is the way of living in the third world countries or developing countries.

Edit: The technology improvement is slow in these countries. The internet speed is laughable, so very few dare to download big things from the net and also no one can play multiplayer through internet.

Then there is the whole issue with inconsistent power in those countries causing hardware and software failures at such an incredibly high rate that most vendors don't want to service them. You need a good infrastructure environment for technology before the technology makers would want to support those sales. For most 3rd world countries, support costs are way too high right now, so piracy will occur - but the pirates end up getting what they pay for. Once the countries can put an infrastructure in place, the market follows - look at the asian markets that have blossomed with vendor support after the infrastructures were improved, even in the last decade.

After all this time, Linux groups are still arguing how it fits the market. Half the user base wants many flavors of Linux for many different functions and the other half wants to increase its user base by standardization so that businesses can support it. I think Linux was a great idea that will end up as a novelty or niche technology because of this lack of consensus or ability to place a profitable business model on it. IBM and HP both tried a desktop Linux move and were dissed by the Linux community. So now, its a "if nothing else works try this" OS for their servers, where businesses will still require support services. "Free" may be fun to play with, but few companies will rely on it for an OS model. So piracy will continue, but for the most part its for places and people that wouldn't buy the product anyway so few companies care too much.

Vista Ultimate cost £370 in Pc world. It is waaay too much money for what is XP SP3 with a skin. (And it's slower, buggy etc)

In the same thread that you brought up the cost, the OEM version is cheaper than XP. This was already proven.

Vista, from what I've seen, is far less buggy than XP pre-SP1. I'll also even argue that Vista runs my programs faster than XP.
