The 4:3 setting on my Philips 34" 34PW8502 has a slight curvature to left
edge. Is this something a tech can open up and adjust? This anomaly is
bugging the hell out of me.

The tech probably won't need to go inside the TV, he'll just enter the
service
mode and make the adjustments onscreen.
If you're feeling brave, you might try it yourself- but,
write down any settings before making changes.
On the remote, press 062596, status.
On your set, I believe you hit "menu" to escape.
Philips can sell you the service manual instructions on CD-R. Good luck.

I have the same problem on my 34" JVC. The techs around here did not even
know my model. I just learned to live with it as I don't watch in 4:3 much
anyway. I don't like 'techs' getting paid for doing what I already did,
seeing a problem and wondering what to do about it.

Now that is a very informative post!
Why not...
Post the model. Someone here might have some specific knowledge of it.
Post your location. Someone might know a good servicer in your area.
Post the name of the company that charges for techs that wonder what to do
so that others will know.

There must be something going around. My RCA 38" (F38310) has this aberration.
I can't find an adjustment for it in menu options. I would have thought that if
the set had a compensating adjustment for Earth's magnetic field, it might
logically correct for the pinch effect, as well.
Thanks.............S

Larger direct view CRTs, especially since they have been made flatter, are
more likely to have geometric aberations. Some can be adjusted out, some
cannot. You need to have the set evaluated by a tech who is VERY familiar
with CRT alignment and with your set.

So should I attempt this "service mode" adjustment? As long as I write down
the settings, it can be reset at any time, right?

Awesome, thanks for the tip. What kind of settings am I looking for? If I
make some kind of fatal error, will the service techs be able to tell and
invalidate my warranty?

Okay, what am I missing here... the TV just switches to channel 62. How do
I tell the TV it's about to accept a service code...

You may need to hit menu or info, instead of status.

Whatever! I'll try google and the advice of friendly people in the know
before I shell out for a manual to fix something that can probably take me
all of 5 MINUTES TO FIX. Like I really want to spend more money after
buying a g*d damn TV, plus wait two weeks for some CD-ROM to show up at my
door.

I'm familiar with them. I fixed a serious overscan issue on my 34PW9815
using the service menu.
With a little patience, Aphelion may be easily able to fix his set.
Sure beats paying some surly repair tech ~$100/hr to do the same simple
adjustment.

Then tell him what to do if you know so much. Adjusting overscan on a
direct view set is often easy. Adjusting pincushion is sometimes easy,
depending on the set, sometimes impossible. So tell us, since you are
familiar with them.

For the Philips 34PW9815 (and many others), enter service code 062596,
info+.
You'll end up on some high channel, so use the remote to get back the
channel you want.
On the service screen:
For pincushion adjustments:
Slide the puck down to "alignments".
Go 4 ticks to the right to "Geo-nor".
Slide down to "E/W Parabola".
Adjust the slider, observing changes to screen pincushion.
To save, click up once, then hit menu on the remote to escape.
Then, there are 5 more adjustments the OP might try to fix his particular
problem.
I don't have time to experiment with those on my set.

Thank you, this is all very helpful.
