Memory Problems

A friend has a laptop and after doing an update - the laptop started to run very slowly - and a pop up message about memory came up saying to restart the computer. When switching the computer back on - some items in task panel are missing - and the icons that are showing - do not seem to work. Also cannot seem to shut down the computer - has to hold down the button to switch it off. Any help would be appreciated
