I installed Zone Alarm a couple days ago after uninstalling Norton, and ever since, I have gotten a Data Execution Prevention message at startup that says DEP has closed Windows Explorer. After I close the message, everything except the background disappears, and come back. When it comes back, I notice several icons in the system tray are missing, such as the windows update balloon, quicktime, Easytune from my motherboard, and eVGA's Reschanger, they are gone.

Can some one help me with this problem or point me in the right direction? Thanks!

zone alarm is a firewall nod is an av what do you have for av right now?

before we disable or look at dep we need to make sure your system is clean and dep is not stopping a malicious software

Zone Alarm is also my anti-virus. I ran a scan, and several viruses of the name Trojan-PSW.Win32.WOW.qf and Trojan-PSW.Win32.OnlineGames.lz. These were quarantined, and so far, the DEP alert has not showed up.

Does anyone know how serious these viruses are?

your av may have been compromised by the viruses.

download and install Nod32 Free 30 Day Trial and update then scan and clean again. after that get yourself a better av like Nod32 ;)

and make sure you turn off system restore before you scan also make sure nod's settings look like this before you scan

Nod32 settings http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/3649/49972728zj7.th.png

after that if you PC is fine then you should be OK, if your PC is not acting right and giving you errors then some of your system files may have been deleted or messed up from the viruses. this you can fix by doing an XP repair from your XP CD ;)

Should I uninstall Zone Alarm before installing nod32?

just the anti virus. keep the firewall.

Before I uninstall Zone Alarm, the viruses which it found were quarantined, but not deleted. The viruses I mentioned above were had the path C:/WINDOWS/mppds.exe and C:/WINDOWS/system32/mppds.dll most of the others were in C:\System Volume Information/restore/long list of numbers and letters.

They weren't fixed or deleted by Zone Alarm, is it okay if I delete them manually?

delete them from quarantine.

once you disable system restore those in the \System Volume Information/restore will be deleted.

so yes remove all viruses and then install nod set nod settings and do a full scan with system restore disabled.
