XP vs. Vista - A Tale of Framerates
Seldom has the rumor mill turned faster than when gamers talk about gaming in Vista. Some folks are staying away from the new OS simply because they feel it doesn’t game well. We set out to put some hard numbers on those claims.

OK We're going to have a completely fair test that compares XP and Vista. Incidentially, we are going to use two cards with Nvidia chipsets (nevermind that it is very well known issue that Nvidia's Vista support is a total ABORTION on all fronts) and then whomever wins the FPS competition, we will declare is the best OS??!?

That about sums up enthusiast' claim, right? and you thought it was good? gemme a break...

Good read - I just wish they would've used ATI cards too. While I'm not biased towards ATI or nVidia (I use both), I think ATI currently has better Vista drivers - and by including ATI, I think that they could more reasonably conclude whether discrepancies are Vista or driver related.

Although I'm not a hardcore gamer, I always check the user forums such as Rage3d and nZone whenever new drivers are released - just to get others experiences/problems before I update. With ATI's latest release (7.4) some are claiming performance increases greater than ATI's claim of 30%.

In short, I think it's still too early to tell the difference in performace increase/decrease between what is caused by Vista, and what is driver related. But, by using both brands, they could have better identified a "trend".

I guess this Vista Ultimate that I bought recently may have to wait to be installed until the first service pack comes out. I see now that there is no hurry to install it. Or reason to install it yet.

The SP won't make a difference - it all comes down to hardware support from the manufacturers in which NVidia's support is poor overall.

Yea some ATI cards would off been good to see cause i also want to get myself one asap. When the new 2900 cards come out i guess we will see some more BM

you can allways install it on a seperate HD then you can have the best off both worlds :)

Well for those that have nvid's (like me) its still a good report on weather or not to upgrade to vista or not now, or wait till they update the drivers. Wouldnt you say? Also if the drivers were all crap then why did they win some BM. Ive been told the drivers were ok now.

NVidia drivers still suck, but they just suck less than they did when Vista was first released. Why does NVidia not show a fps increase over XP, but newer ATI cards do? If NVidia would clean up their act, a lot of people would change their minds concerning their Vista experience because few users realize the driver issue - and it doesn't help when you have clueless people like the ones in the link who believe their NVidia experience tells it all.

OMFG things run slower and require more power on the new OS!!! How is this a surprise?
