I notice that in the 7/7/05 post by Urp entitled "How to make ActiveSync
synchronise WAV recordings", he/she mentions editing the PPC registry. I
can't even find the registry in my PPC (Dell Axim X30). How do I find it &
what executable is available to edit the registry?

Thank you in advance.

Phil,

You will need to have a registry editor application to get into the
registry.

For most tweaks, I would highly recommend Tweaks2K2. It is easy to use and
is a lot less "dangerous" than editing the raw file. Go to
http://www.tweaks2k2.com for more information.

For a free true registry editor, check out PHM Registry Editor at
http://www.phm.lu/Products/PocketPC/RegEdit/.

Be sure to back up your device before you start tweaking... just in case ;-)

Regards,

Hi Clinton:
Thanks for the references. The second one looks decent, and I don't plan to
do too much editing (while I've probably edited the registry on my desktop a
few hundred times, I'm new to PPCs.:-)

I saw your advice on backing up my device. I noticed that the options on my
Dell Axim X30 allowed backing up Data only, not the whole system. I also
couldn't find an option to back up to my desktop. As my built-in storage is
only 32MB & I use my 1 GB storage card for maps, do you know if it's
possible to back the entire system up to my desktop (& then restore via
Active Sync, if necessary)?

Thanks again. I appreciate your time.

Phil,

Absolutely it is possible to back up to the desktop. The easiest way to do
this is via ActiveSync using the Backup/Restore function. This is what I
use every Friday to back up my device and I've never had a problem backing
up or restoring.

Just be sure when you use this feature to do a "full backup" the first time
(or everytime... it doesn't take that long).

Hi Clinton:
Thanks so much for your reply. It took all of 20 seconds to do a full
backup to my desktop. I never thought of looking in the Active Sync menus
on my desktop...only on the PPC.<g>

Yes it does. It just gives you a message on installation because it doesn't
recognise any OSes newer than 2002.

As far as the majority of users of this forum are concerned, any and all
forms of replies are welcome as it is important that the focus be on
solving problems, not on the format of the message or responses.

In addition, the "rules" you refer to make it difficult, if not
impossible, to read and follow any thread using the actual subject of
this forum, a pocketpc or any other pda, not to mention the additional
and unnecessary increase in connect time costs for those connecting via
cellular networks.

Finally, modern newsreaders pretty eliminate the need for those outdated
"rules"

Let's not have the top posting versus bottom posting argument. There are no
rules. It's up to me how I post my messages. I prefer top posting, always
have and always will, so you have to live with it. You prefer bottom posting
and I have to live with that.

C'est la vie!!!!

Of course there is, RFC1885: Netiquette guidelines.
http://www.dtcc.edu/cs/rfc1855.html

3.1.1 General Guidelines for mailing lists and NetNews

- If you are sending a reply to a message or a posting be sure you
summarize the original at the top of the message, or include just enough
text of the original to give a context. This will make sure readers
understand when they start to read your response. Since NetNews,
especially, is proliferated by distributing the postings from one host
to another, it is possible to see a response to a message before seeing
the original. Giving context helps everyone. But do not include the
entire original!

The RFC is informal, meaning that bottom-posting is not *the* standard,
however, it makes it a standard opinion (since AFAIK no contrary opinions
have been written).

IMHO it's far more natural to read document in one direction, especially
in long threads, instead of having to continualy scroll down to see the
original text and scrolL up to read the reply.

>forum (hence the microsoft.PUBLIC.pocketpc) with a million newsreader appls
>out there...

M$ bears a lot of the blame for the proliferation of top-posting by
placing the insert point *and* the signature above the quoted text by
default and in some cases makes it difficult *not* to top-post. So the
lazy users just top-post above the *whole* previous post instead of
cleaning up the previous post to include just the relevant parts. Not to
mention that M$, in its usual infinite wisdom and arrogance breaks RFC
concerning signature separator.

Check out http://www.caliburn.nl/topposting.html for a good page
describing why bottom-posting is better than top-posting (some of the
points I've made are also there).

>Get a scrolling mouse... ;-)

You have a *mouse* on your pocket PC ? Good for you. The rest of us
don't, so TOP POST if you want it to be readable on a pocket PC.

Gotta say this - I have a mouse on my Pocket PC - the Think Outside BT

Of course, this has nothing to do with the discussion at hand! :)
