So my local CC has this 226bw has this monitor for sale as open-box. It was a display model.

It is on sale for $309

Is this a good LCD? Worth the price?

Should I be cautious about buying a used panel?

thanks

I have one and many sites reckon its the best 22" lcd in the world.

It has a 2ms response and is simply the best lcd I've ever owned, seems faster than my Mitusbishi Diamond Pro CRT!!

Be aware there are 2 models - one has an "S" on the bar code on the rear of the monitor and the other an "A".

The "S" panel is made by Samsung. The "A" panel by AOC. Many reckon the "A" panel to be inferior so you will want to buy an "S" panel.

I have a "S" panel model, bought brand new, and it rocks! It is a good as everyone said it would be (I asked for many opinions here prior to purchase) and couldn't be happier. :D :D :D

I have never bought an open box item before, so I would say buyer beware. Because it is an open box item, you may have the ability to check the panel (A or S) before purchase (I just got lucky.)

I am always interested in a good deal or bargain, but I think the $70 dollars more I paid for mine has easily paid me back in peace of mind (never a worry) in the month I have owned it. Your call.

I helped someone build their computer recently (less than a month ago) and they bought the 226bw from Circuit City. It turned out to be the A model, but with the right settings the picture quality on the monitor was pretty dam good. From what I recall he paid a bit more than $309, but not too much more ($309< somewhere here <$330). If you decide to purchase the open box model, make sure they remember to include the cables.

As far as being cautious about buying a used panel...

Make sure you review their policy on open box monitors.

Make sure they give you the right display model and not just some open box monitor someone else returned for some other reason.

This monitor was released relatively recently; therefore I don't know why they would be selling their display so soon.

To check if it uses the S or A panel look at the back of the monitor. There should be an S or A letter printed somewhere near the model number (it is not part of the model #).

I'd like to hear more from S, A, and C model owners. I've read some quite varied reviews. Some are completely unhappy with their A panels, while others claim the A panel is the best LCD they've ever used. Now, I've seen some reviews on newegg from people who claim to have a C panel, though they still seem pretty happy with it. I'm pretty sure I want this monitor for my new pc, but I don't think there is any way of ensuring I get an S panel, so I'd like to hear opinions from you guys.

I have an (A) panel and I have a very odd graphical issue. I'm not sure if its the monitor or drivers.

When playing an FPS and turning around the image slightly flickers/lags/etc.

The best way for me to explain/ show it to someone is open an xp window and move it around. The border of the window sorta breaks apart, that's what happens in game when I turn around.

What graphics card are you using?

I will be using a nvidia 7900GS on a brand new c2d setup

I have actually seen this monitor - I will probably go take another look at it.

S panel here, very very happy with it, image quality is great and gaming on it rox

that is basically the issue here. S panels are fine while the rest are either junk or ok after calibration. Honestly I think its lame that Samsung is duping the consumer.

I have an A panel with a 7900gt. I'm no panel guru so I'm not too picky. Having said that, to me games like Stalker, COD2, Madden, and Warrock run and look great. No ghosting. There is some backlight bleed but that does not bother me in the least. Great monitor. Would love to have an A and S side by side to see how much better the S really is, if at all.

I second that. Its annoying because this is probably the best LCD I have seen in its price range. Lots of companies outsource manufacturing, but if the product is inferior, they need to rectify the situation. If I get this and there is something wrong with my panel, I'm going to raise hell with just about everyone I can find that has had anything to do making/selling this monitor untill the problem is solved.

I just one of those monitors from Newegg and it was a bit less than that, so for a used one, I think the price is a bit much. Newegg sent the "S" model as well, so I guess I'm doing good. Watch for sales, you might get a better price new, or you might try to bargan the quoted price down a bit.

i doubt the S panel is much better, A is supposed to be as good with a little tweaking, having said that id say i done as much tweaking getting my S panel setup as i like it

Ive done no tweaking what so ever. Just turned it on and ran with it. Wouldn't even know how to get the color's "right". Everything looks good though.

I'm guessing that's because you don't have vsync enabled, try going to the video options in the game and enable vsync.

Ask about the warranty. Open Box items typically have a 90 day warranty. A new Samsung 226BW comes with a 3 year warranty.

You can buy a new 226BW from Buy.com for $300 + free shipping.
