Hi everyone,
I wasn't quite sure where to post this question but thought someone might know something about an issue with a older piece of learning software called French To Go by Broderbund. It was designed to run on Windows 3.1 and besides very minimal hardware requirements by today's standards, also required a Sound Blaster or SB Compatible sound card, and Quick Time player. It's 9 years old and I am very much aware of the many incompatibilities that would prevent it from operating under Win XP.
However, I would like to understand possibly what may be the source of the problem. Now to the problem ...
I've installed the software on both a Win XP Pro and Windows 2000 client with the same result. The installation proceeds without error and on running the tutorial application, a nice little 'French To Go' display splash appears with some music (yes, there is music and sound at this point); then, an attractive female voice comes on and says "Welcome to French To Go!".
You're then presented with a Menu of 7 Lesson choices. Choosing the 'Getting Started' one, a sub-window or child window appears on the right of the screen bordered by a 'picture' frame and a video appears of the instructor (and this is the problem) with NO sound while she's speaking in French. On the left hand pane, what she is 'supposed to be saying' appears as typed Text, at least the main points of her tutorial.
Now, even while the video tutorial is running, you can run your mouse pointer over the French text and click -- and it will immediately ECHO the French pronunciation in alternative a male and female voice. So there is still sound JUST not on the inside picture-window display video.
I've figured out it's possibly 1 of 2 or 3 things. I updated my Quick Time player AND changed the File Association of the (.WAV) file so it is the default .WAV file player and that didn't do anything. Before that Windows Media Player was assigned as the default .WAV file player. Yes, I found the directory folder where the accompanying tutorial video sound clips are stored and by clicking on them, they play fine.
So, I'm thinking it may be: 1.) My sound card on the Win XP system is NOT Sound Blaster compatible (My Win 2000 client has a Sound Blaser Live card -- but it still did not work, same results -- good install, everything seems to work except the tutorial video sound). Or, there is possibly some Legacy Audio setting or IRQ that needs changed ...
If you have any ideas, suggestions or reasons, I'd appreciate your reply.
I know it's a relatively minor issue but it just bugs me that I don't know the reason; even if I can't fix it. BTW, I have an old boat anchor Win 95 Pentium Pro 150 and the tutorial plays just fine on it.
Thanks,
Gary
