Now here is the problem I am having...
If I let the PS sit in BIOS, the fan on the Heatsink will run normally. Once it boots into Windows XP Pro it will intermittently stop and start. I normally would not be worried, except I have not seen this type of behavior from a HSF before. It does not appear to be affecting the temps as they hover at around 38-39C when Idle. Just speed fan and cpu-z running to monitor. The motherboard beeps every time the fan stops and is driving me nuts(currently disconnected to save my sanity.)

Here is what I have done...
Updated all drivers including windows to latest. Updated the BIOS to F11B which adds support for the 6420.

Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks!!!! :)

Is Smart Fan enabled in the bios? It enabled has caused this behavior in the past on Gigabyte MBs.

I didn't see it in the BIOS, where is it? I looked in the manual and the only reference to smart fan is through the Utility program which I have not installed yet...

It is definatly the smartfan option as accord99 mentions.

Go into Bios, PC Health Status and then down to Fan Speed Control Method. Set this to Disable. Your fan will then spin all the time at approx 1800 rpm keeping your chip nice and chilly.

i tried this. my computer has all the same symptoms as his. but my core 2 6420 2.13 ghz fan will intermittently start and stop spontaneously at boot-up [does not consistently happen every boot-up] and even with smart fan control disabled it continues to occur.

any help would be appreciated, as i refrain from using my system whilst there is a risk of heat damage to susceptible components.
