So I go and post to all the Sega and Dreamcast groups, and neglect to post
to the one group where people might have actually owned and used the
thing...
I'm looking to buy a Dreamcast Broadband adapter, please. I'm willing to
pay a premium and I'm looking to pick up more than one unit, if possible.
I'm looking to set up, test, and maintain a homebrew PSO server and I need
the hardware to figure that out. If it helps to persuade you to sell, I'm
also looking to backward engineer the thing so that people can build their
own (or at least a equivalent that the console might detect correctly.)
Please contact me at kendrick@io.com if you've got one you're willing to
sell, and I'm willing to entertain just about any offer. Thanks.
-KKC, who's known to bite off more than he can chew. On the other hand, I
did figure out how to drop a RAID array into an Xbox, so anything's
possible in my house. --

Yeah, I'm aware of the big homebrew projects open to the public right now.
I'm more interested in the hardware side of this than the software side,
and ideally what I want to do is fix it so that more people can use all
the homebrew DC online resources.
I've actually got another related project brewing... With embedded OS,
single-function devices being all the rage, I wanted to see if a PPP
server on a chip would be possible. Ideally, what you do is combine a 10
megabit ethernet port and a modem with its own line simulator, and in
between you have a Linux or Windows CE core that just shuttles packets
between the two interfaces. Forgo any storage requirements by hard-coding
some generic authentication data and you can pretty much plug your
Dreamcast modem into one end, and a free port on your router to the other.
The advantage of this is that you could have out-of-the-box Broadband
capability for all DC games, many of which support only the modem. The
disadvantage is that it's not instant on, and there would be the usual
delays associated with dial-up connections, even though it's all local.
Also, line simulators that aren't just batteries connected to a manual
switch are difficult to control from software, even though nearly half of
the modem and Winmodem hardware in circulation is capable of the function.

Are you willing to pay $180 for one? Because I am. Got my tax refund last
week, I did.
-KKC, off to pick up cheap Gamecube titles at Target.
