Cand you disable all of the resource/ram hogging features in vista like you could in xp? My xp looks like win2k b/c i shout off all bells and whistles.

Also, does it matter which version you use for gaming?

Thanks.

p.s. could not find this in search. if its an old topic, sorry.

Sure! when you shout things off in XP, what do you say... something like "out damn spot!" or what?

Not really. If you are just going to turn the most things off, you can probably get away with Home Basic.

no kidding? home basic huh. good to know. That will save me some bucks.

ha i get it after i read my post. i definitely meant shut off. thanks for the info.

edit: can't find basic in 64 bit other than for system builders or oem. system builders version says i can only install on your system once or only one hardware configuration. i can't tell.

basically, I upgrade and/or reformat often. what version can i use? will oem work ok?

Ok, I found a way to get a copy, but it is only by downloading it from microsoft. Screw that. I need a copy to hold. I'll be dammned if I have to download it every time i need to reinstall.

God, I hope i'm wrong. Someone tell me i'm wrong. You can even flame me.

Vista Home Basic 64-bit Retail Box version is hard to get.

if it's not a money thing, get Ultimate retail - comes with both flavors in the box and you never have to worry about not having _some_ special feature available in the future (aero, remote access, backup, HD support, fax/scanner, domain networking, media center for that home AV system you put together next year, MS games, dreamscene, mobility, and only MS knows what else...). All of my systems (those I own and those I maintain) are all Ultimate and have all of those things, so I don't really know what items are missing at each of the lower levels.

you really should checkout what is different at each level, there are a lot of little things that may force you in the future to do that instant 'upgrade' trick. Have you looked at what the total cost would be, upgrading one step at a time, going from Basic to Ultimate (I have no clue, I'm just curious)?

I've checked the versions, and there is stuff i know i will neve use in the ultimate and even premium editions. I just don't need all that fluff. all i use my pc for is gaming and the internet. anything else i use additional software for.

I found out how to get "boxed" versions for other than ultimate. amazon.com says:
"PLEASE NOTE: Only the 32-bit DVD-ROM is included. Inside the box, you will find instructions on how to order a 32-bit CD-ROM or 64-bit DVD-ROM directly from Microsoft for a minimal fee, including shipping and handling."

what a rip off. I bet the minimal fee is like $50 or something.

edit: it turns out the new disc should cost less than $20. also, i'm just gonna wait untill the dx10 game start coming out. (Besides lost planet.)

You just kill the "Themes" service and feel the Win2k power flowing in your Vista. There are a lot of other services waiting to be killed though. You should do a google search and see for yourself.
