Ok folks... the big step is upon me!
Dialup is getting terminally sucky
Broadband Costs a bloody bucket here in Australia, thanks to damn Tel$tra... So dont laugh or cry when you see these plans, Believe me, they are the BEST available.
Dont have Cable TV, so cable is out of the picture (and too expensive) leaving just ADSL. 256/64 is just pathetic, 1500/256 is rediculously costly, leaving just 512/128 as moderately fast and affordable.
I will mostly use it to download pics, music and Divx movies. Also a bit of browsing and hopefully some decent Online gaming

Cost is in $AU where $1AU = $.58c US.

I voted for 4 (you knew that). For everyone else, just select what you want and hit ENTER. You don't need the button.

Yeah, #4 sounds ok. I pay $50Us = $86 Au ( i think). Yours is still expensive, and i can't belive they have download caps. Those crazzy oz people. I get 768/128k, unlimitd upload and download, from what i know.

Yeah i was considering 4... but the fineprint makes it less exciting, especially if i want to do some gaming after heavy downloading.
With #4 your download speeds and quality of pings is determined by ones rank, and thats determined by your download habits for the past 30 days. *hmmm*

HAHAHA. Oh get this... i was just delving into the terms and conditions for one of the ADSL plans and found this absolute gem!

I'll not vote for any. You really need to check all T & C with these ISPs. For example...my ISP is £3-£5 more expensive per month, but I get 8 (5 usable) static IPs, 50MB webspace hosted for free, unlimited monthly (5GB per day if you like ( )) bandwidth, and half decent tech support.

Rarely worry, pay an extra £3 per month for peace of mind, and decent services.

Reply to camieabz

Argh, you big meanie! vote! vote!

Ive had a look at their terms and they all seem familiar a certain number of mailboxes, of which ill use 1 tops, a chunk of webspace that ill barely use and full time tech support seems to be fortunately a common thing.

The onyl differentiating details are the $$$ download caps and other pits and pieces like upload caps, throttling and off/on peak utilisation.

wow. I'm not sure what to tell you anymore. It sounds like AOL has been influencing Aussie broadband :(

Just get the best that you can afford and accept it's faults I guess.

No Just Tel$tra... allways Tel$tra.
AOL learnt all they know from Tel$tra im sure.

Getting down to the basics, all the ISP's have to run on Tel$tra cabling and routers and whatnot... so real competition doesnt exist as they all have to pay/Mb for the bandwidth their customers use.
So everyone gets a nice "base rate butt-raping" regardless of ISP.

Probably the reason why alot of companies are trialing wireless, satelite or even adsl over powerlines.

Somewhere between uber expensive and forget it.
Plus, its not available in my area, nor many others... rollout is somewhat slow.
Besides, if i could get it, it would mean putting a new line to and into the house... which would mean big $$$.

Reply to lhgpoobaa

Ok. I voted for option 2, because:

a) It's the lowest price, and that in itself will encourage good competitive price changes across the board.

b) Uncapped limits.

Having reviewed lots of documents and details... and read reports from people at overclockers.com.au... the "unlimited" plan sounds nice, but apparently if you try to get unlimited one very quickly finds themselves at modem speeds. Not a great outcome.

Yup. I feared that might be the case. Worth also checking out any get out clauses involved with all/any. Some have a minimum contract over here and will charge a fair bit to migrate.

Reply to camieabz

I voted 2 also. Kinda sounds like Tel$tra has a monopoly going on over there. I know what you can do, move to the U.S. where most cable providers have no caps whatsoever...lol. I hope the one you do pick works for you though!!

lifesucks

Is that really $90 per Gb or GB over the 8Gig cap in option 1.
I have a 20GB cap down + up per month. If I go over it costs $7.95/GB.
The most I have used in one month is a little less than 5GB.
BTW my ADSL service is 3Mb down 512kb up for $74/month including taxes.

<font color=red><i>Doctor Hooter</i></font color=red> <A HREF="http://www.page3.com/" target="_new"><b>(·Y·)</b></A>

Reply to zpyrd

No, thats 8Gb on and another 8Gb off, with the $90 bux refering to costs per gigabyte OVER the caps.
And thats one of the better ones...
Should you get a measly 300Mb plan it costs something like $150/Gb if you go over your cap... Truly ass-raping in the extreme.

yeah... you have good USABLE broadband. Ours is expensive unreliable and capped to buggery!

What about broadband from a cable TV company?
Don't you have any choices down under?

<font color=red><i>Doctor Hooter</i></font color=red> <A HREF="http://www.page3.com/" target="_new"><b>(·Y·)</b></A>

Reply to zpyrd

I thought i had covered that... or maybe not.

There are two main cable TV suppliers, Optus and Foxtel.

Foxtel dont do cable Internet, so the only real cable internet provider is optus, and i wont be getting that because.

A. Its not available in my area (and many others)
B. Its damn expensive!
C. If it were available, we would still have to rewire the house... and that's Expen$ive!

So there. ADSL is the only coice that wont break the bank.

Poor guy...i'm paying $35 a month for cable which truely is 1.5 down 128 up in my neighborhood (my college is surrounded by a really crappy neighborhood, so no one seems to be on cable lol). I've d/led at over 900k/s and always play with pings sub 50, so i don't know if i'm really getting 1.5 down, but that's good enough for me =D

I live in rural north Georgia USA.
The only option is DSL. Satelite has a ping of about 500 to start with. So this excludes it if you want to game online.
Cable is not available. I and several other people near me applied every other month for two years. Finally they installed a switch in the box where we live.

$70 US per month for 1500 down and 256 up. On good days with a couple downloads going at once I cap out about 1700.
NO Limits.
But it is the only thing available. Price sux but it is sweet....:)

I aint signing nothing!!!

As others have said, move to Canada. I pay $30 Cnd a month for a 1.5 Mb/s connection with no caps and hardly any variation in speed. My actual speed is usually between 100 and 150 kB/s. And this is the low level ADSL plan here. Upload is a bit slower, usually maxing out around 50 kB/s but I'm happy over all.

I would go with option 2 or 4.

Yes... its looks that way.
get #2 for limited downloads but reliable ping or #4 for heaps of downloads but allmost guaranteed shoddy ping.

First ill go to a swapmeet today, get a good but cheap NIC & ethernet cable.
Then ill get an adsl modem (preferable BLACK) LOL.
Then ill signup to a plan :)

be happy. you at least have the choice of ADSL. i have modem or isdn. and if you get isdn then they send some one round with a pinapple to screw you to hell if you even think of adsl ever again. the worst part is that we have a cable line running right past the end of the road but thats not conected in are area aparantly! if you want good broard band though, go to sweeden. E1 (to the us T1) is a cheep as cable and E3 is also very reasonable (dont have prices to hand but the goverment is supposed to be subserdising it to make it take off)

Now thats what I want to know!

Some moderately cheap NIC, as they are all the same, some Dlink line filters, and a Dlink DSL504 router/adsl modem and #2 plan, the 6+6Gb one.

Me personally ive had two Dlink products, a 56k modem and a NIC. Both have worked flawlessly, thats why im getting dlink router/adsl modem
