For someone like me who wants HD content, major network affiliates in
HD, doesn't have access to any local HD signals, and who doesn't want
to go with cable, which is the better choice--DirecTV or Dish Network?

I have Dish Network now and am considering upgrading to their 811 HD
receiver--and, in time, their 921 HD DVR. However, I'm wondering if
this might be a good time to switch to DirecTV?

Some random thoughts:

- DTV's NFL package isn't very important to me.
- I'm not sure how DTV's Tivo DVR compares to DN's 921 DVR.
- DN says they carry CBS HD and that they pass through ABC's and Fox's
HD content, when broadcast. Is that true?
- Will either DTV or DN be transmitting all of the major network
affiliates (ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox) in HD anytime soon?
- What about the non-major networks like UPN (i.e., Star Trek:
Enterprise) in HD?
- Is there anything else I should be aware of?

Sorry for so many questions, but I find this to be a very complex and
confusing topic.

They rely on OTA for network HD unless you can qualify for the remote
network feed and then there is CBS in HD but I don't think many people
qualify for it. I believe UPN is available as part of the superstations pack
but not in HD. If you cannot receive OTA HD locals you will not be able to
receive any HD programming except what actually comes in the HD programming
pack like ESPN HD, Discovery HD, etc. Currently Dish and Direct are the same
in this regards I believe. There are rumours that Direct is re-tasking some
soon to be launched satellites and it will allow them to provide HD locals
to a large percentage of users sometime in 2006 but I think these are still
just rumors at this time.

There is another school of thought that before any of the SAT or cable
companies greatly increase their HD content they will switch to a different,
more efficient compression method like MPEG4 that will obsolete any existing
receivers.

I hope not, MPEG 4 will downgrade the PQ.

Guy, I will warn you about the Networks. I'm using the Dish Network
and do pay for the HDTV service at $109 per year. I don't think they
charged me for the 811 receiver. It was a swap out for another Dish
receiver I was using in this room. I had the HD service on the living
room TV with a purchased 811 at $149 a year ago.

I was looking forward to watching football on ABC and the FOX
channels. I was informed I live in a area where ABC and FOX would not
allow Dish to supply those HD channels. Dish even wrote the stations
asking for a waiver. I called a few weeks later and still they said
no.

I searched google for more information. I found that if your local
(within 100 miles) are owned locally you have to put up a outdoor
antenna to receive them. If the stations are owned by the networks
like many in Dallas they Dish may be able to supply them in your HD
package.

I mention CBS and FOX I think were the two that Dish offered about six
months ago. They may offer more networks i'm not sure.

Anyway, I bought a PR-8800 Winegard UHF only antenna. Its a 8 bow tie
type and I installed a 25 db antenna mounted pre-amp. Both are up 30
feet from the ground. The TV stations transmit from a mountain 85
miles from me. Luckily it's line of site. My antenna is up 30 feet
above the ground. I get a perfect picture, digital or HD with all the
networks. I get ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX and PBS.

I have noticed more prime time night shows are now in HD.

Sorry I don't know much about Direct TV or Voom.
