power options properties

After doing a clean install of windows xp sp2 I am not able to use my stand by option. I have gone into power management and have found that when I went into advanced settings, I only have three of the five settings required to op the system. When I click on start, turn off computer, a screen with three choices apear, turn off, restart, and stand by. The stand by selection has been faded out, leaving it inop. I think that during the install, all the required hardware for the installation of the power management was not found. I have tried to find a solution, but to no avial. Please advise.
