I have an HP pavillion 7920 running windows me and the cd plays an audio cd but when I put a blank in it will not detect a CD

What burning software are you using? A blank CD may not be detected as such in Win 9x / ME.

I have adaptec direct cd software that came with computer

Well if you have a CD-ROM, then it's not going to do anything with blank discs. You need a CD-R or CD-RW drive in order to be able to read and write to blank discs.
