Anserwing my own question as have sorted this now
In Firefox in address bar type about:config enter, scroll down to the line print_print_printer ringht click and reset
In Thunderbird gfo to Tools/Options/Advanced click on config editor scroll down as above
Yup it works 
I note that changing default printer with a number of printers set up can cause hese progs to be
