It seems from posts read that Vista HP is slower than XP for gaming.

If you were to shut off the extra showy stuff while gaming, would it be as fast as XP?

Solution
1. Vista is or has caught up many games now for performance

2. Turning off the 'showy stuff' makes no difference because it doesn't have a system overhead in the same way that XP did

If yuo want to future proof and be ready for DX10, go with Vista. If not, stick with XP if you can get it cheaper.
