Win98 Install/startup crash

CPU AMD Sempron 1.05 MHz, 2GB Ram, 500 GB HD

Attempting to setup/run Win98SE as dual boot OS. Installed W98 on FAT partition. After installation attempts to run Win98 produces error " Insufficient memory to Initialize Windows, press any key to continue." Results in a powerdown state.

Have Modified Vcache size to 512Mb.

Your help will be appreciated.

Thank you.

  1. Didn't Windows 98 have a problem running on anything more than 512MB of RAM? You'd be better off running 98 in a virtual machine rather than trying to actually boot it on that system.

Strange as it may seem, Original 1GB Ram, dual boot Win98 installed clean and ran, without any hitches.

I had forgotten about a virtual machine, but with the added 1 Gb ram will explore that avenue.

    Thank you.
  3. Many modern motherboards won't run Windows 98.
