what kind of psu can power 2 8800gts sli, and does it matter if its a 320 or 640 mb versions when it comes to power consumptions? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E1681...

Get BFG's 1000watt Inexpensive, Good, Can handle my two 8800GTX's Just fine. Make sure that your tower can house such a monster, Also, you will need a 12volt line extension if you have a fulltower and want to SLI. Cables are too short to run to the bottom card!

If you haven't bought the 2 8800 GTS's, I would wait until the HD2900XT comes out next Monday.

You'll never be able to build a "future proof" system. Just build a system that will do what you want/need it to do and makes you happy.
