This will be my first homebuilt rig in about 7 years, that is if I don't deploy to Iraq (waiting on word). If I do, I'll just buy my computer after the deployment.
My last computer I bought was a multimedia laptop in early 2004...needless to say it is inadequate to play the latest games...even Civ IV is a clunker on it.
And as a result, I've been somewhat out of the loop on hardware but I'm starting to come around these last few weeks.
Without further ado, here's my planned $1300 system:
CPU: Intel C2D E6600 Conroe $227.00
Memory: G.SKILL 2GB DDR2800 $139.99
Mobo: ECS P965T-A Intel P965 Express $89.99
Video: PNY Geforce 8800GTS 320MB $269.99
HDD: Samsung 400GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0g/s $96.99
OS: Windows Vista 64-bit Home Basic $94.99
Monitor: Samsung 19" WS 4 ms LCD $184.99
Case: COOLER MASTER Centurion 5 CAC-T05 $49.99
PS: Dynapower 500W $31.99
DVD Burner: Samsung DVD burner $31.99
DVD-ROM: Lite-on $17.99
Speakers: Creative I-Trigue 3300 2.1 $66.99
Any problems with any of these pieces of hardware?
I'm drooling just thinking about playing Supreme Commander. Used to be a hardcore TA player back in the day and for a while I never thought we'd see a sequel. And it pains me that I can't play it! Can't wait to get this system going.
There is one big problem with your build, and 3 minor issues:
BIG:
That PSU has GOT to go. You cannot use that crap with an 8800GTS. Never, ever skimp on the PSU. EVER. Get something in the $80 minimum range, or you will forever be kicking yourself. Spend $100 or so and that'll be good.
MINOR:
-Downgrade the 6600 to a 4300 or 6320. Use that money for a better PSU. Seriously.
-That RAM is fine, but you can get cheaper stuff if you're not overclocking. Get some cheap 667 RAM. 800 is for overclocking.
-That mobo kinda sucks. If you're not overclocking, then it's fine. But for a bit more money you can get a Gigabyte 965P-S3, which is FAR, FAR better than the ECS.
So, you need a better PSU, and you're stuck between overclocking and non-overclocking parts. You need to decide whether you're gonna OC or not. Then that will determine whether to get cheaper RAM or a better mobo. Either way though, get the cheaper CPU and better PSU or you'll regret it when it dies in 6 months.
Off-topic: I played the hell out of Supreme Commander. The unlimited way-point setup system with the ETAs shown was brilliant. Absolutely loved the Cybran race that built the gigantic spider whose laser would destroy everything in the path, the flying bug & the missile launching tank. Used to use multiple enginners to set up a self-defending shielded, missile-ready base that could withstand a spider/mech attack with 4 assault bots (crazy effective; you'll see what i mean when the AI sends in 4-5 of these to paralyse your base) standing by, then build 2 spiders, 1 bug & 1 tank. Put 10 tiny attack/repair spiders, a few enginners & a variety of different units (to draw attention) on each big spiderbot, send 'em out to wipe out a base in an instant, keep launching nukes (take ages to prepare; just one or two on each base; don't get in the path as it will destroy your units as well), & scout the map for survivors with air units. Overall, I found SC a bit stand-off-ish. Resource-gathering was all that mattered. Took quite a long time to finish a campaign. I'm into C&C3 now.
