I have been enjoying the offerings on HD from DirecTV, but a friend is
about to buy a system and asked which is better. Of course I have no
idea, not having the opportunity to see Dish's hd programs.
Can anyone whose seen both or studied the offered programming comment
on which one has a better picture, a better lineup, or a better
equipment offer for HD reception?

Dish seems to have more music-only channels. I believe both systems
supply a method to get HD channels OTA for local channels. And as
another reply suggests, DirecTV has the NFL games exclusively.

I recommend DirecTV.
Both E* and D* are amost the same overall with some exceptions.
HDTVwise, E* offers TNT, D* offers Universal HD, Sunday Ticket (NFL) in
HD, and CBS and NBC for O&O markets.
Fox was scheduled for D* but was stalled. D* subscribers who use the
online account are now seeing ABC and FOX on there acounts suggesting
that they may appear soon.
Both offer an HD DVRs. D*'s popular HD-DirecTIVO goes for $900-$999.
E*'s 921 is now $950.
D* is more fee friendly. E* charges a DVR fee per receiver, D* per
household...for SD or HD DVRs. D* also makes is cheaper for frequent
programmng upgrades and downgrades.
If you don't have the benefit of decent local HDTV signals or even sd
signals you may need to go with the provider that best supports your
local SD locals.
And don't rule out CableTV. Quality and HD offerings vary from system to
system. Even if you have a great localcable company be sure to analyze
the costs. Even after purchasing equipment, satellite tends to be
cheaper in the long run.
(Cable: cheaper for rental but costlier for programming)
This company's demise is predicted by many, but never the less it is
here now with no conrtacts required! If you have access to local HD-OTA
to augment the programming it may actually be a great choice.
