usb use crashes vista

ok. I found an smbus driver from nvidia so vista recognizes usb devices.
Vista will load the usb external media device.
It will show in my computer and it says ready for use.
However if you try to copy to or from the device vista freezes causing me to have to turn of the power.

so any ideas?
im thinking I need a usb driver not an smbus controller, but i have no idea if such a thing even exists.
