Whenever I start up XP, or shut it down, it takes literally about 5 mins to do either. Any ideas what might be causing this?

msconfig and see if this still happens ;)

thanks. I know that'll help when windows starts. What I was talking about though, was the splash screen. The black screen with the windows XP logo and the loading bar? It stays on it for a good 5 minutes before windows actually starts up. any ideas on that one? or is the computer just too slow?

well did you try msconfig yet?

Yeah, I already did. It still says on the splash screen for about 5 mins.

It's my dad's comp so I'm not real familiar with it. But from looking over it, its a 1.91 pentium 4 with 256 RAM and about 28gb open. I'm not in front of it anymore, so I can't get any more detail than that. He only uses it for applications and websurfing, and the comps a couple years old, so I doubt there's much else in it worth mention.

p4 1.91? thats got to be over 6 years old, well not sure what to tell you, maybe it is the PC itself being slow.

just make sure he cleans it with CCleaner

and a good defrag might help also.

Also, 256MB of RAM is the absolute minimum I like to see with XP... I prefer at least 512MB... 1GB is even better.
