XP pro will only recognize 2.xx gigs of RAM. I believe there is a crack you can use to change this but its obviously not supported by M$. Unless its 64bit, I believe it will recognize higher RAM values btu I dont work with the 64bit versions as they hose my games more often then not. 
As far as a machine from spare parts goes though I think youre doing well.
