Disk Defrag problem

Disk Defragmenter won't start in Vista, I click it and nothing happens. I've run chkdsk and googled but can't really find any answer.

There is also apparently no way for me to restart the 'task scheduler' service. I can set every other to restart at logon but there's nothing I can do with this one.

Defrag in Vista doesn't provide a pop-up map of what it's doing. So, it is probably doing something and just not telling you.

right click on stopped, and then restart it. You might beable to change the settings after that. If not it is because something else was turned off that it needs to run. I recommend turning everything that you disabled back on, and start over.

Task scheduler is system critical things like defrag wont work without it.

thread ordering server should be running. With it disabled it some programs such as defrag may not work.

Send more screen shots and I will tell you what to turn back on.

try changing 'Start' from 4 to 2 at

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Schedule

and then rebooting.

It does pop up with something. I ended up just reinstalling anyway before I saw any of these replies.
