hi

Am in need of a replacement for my awful onboard Unichrome video card.

Strict budget of around 50 quid , spotted this card, wonder if anyone can shine some light on this video card for me?

Its a PCIE 6800XT 256mb at exactly 50 quid - spot on my budget !

Is it any good - not a hardcore gamer or anything but I do like to play games every now and again at a reasonable framerate !! (hate slideshows put it that way !!! )

My board is an MSI K9VGM with 1gb dd667 and an athlon 3.5 if that helps !

Any other suggestions for a good budget card welcome ATI or NVIDIA - not fussed which. :D

cheers in advance

well i have an GF6800XT and to tell you the truth its not that bad, if you can find anything else such as a GF 7600GS, GF 6800GS/GT , ATI x1600pro/xt
but if thats all you can get then its not so bad, yes it is an insult to the Gf 6800 series but i have had worse and i can play everything , some on medium most on high so im very happy with it :)

What is your primary use of the system? A little more information about system specs would be good. Like your CPU Model and what PSU you have. A new video card may require you to get a new PSU as well. So i just want to make sure what yur PSU can handle so we don't reccomend a card that would require you to upgrade the PSU.

I will say that the 6800 is a decent card but it sits at the low end range and is fairly power hungry for the type of card it is and it's performance.

My pc is mainly for video editing - I use Linux a lot - but I also would like to play some games in XP every now and again , and the onboard unchrome 9 thing is rubbish (scoring 694 with 3dmark03 ! )

My board is an MSI K9VGM with 1gb ddr667 and an athlon 3.5, 80gb sata Hdd my psu is 400W.

Are the TurboCache card any good? (7300GS 256mb going cheap I see ? )

cheers

hi

all the nvidia cards in my budget range seem to be turbocache which everyone dislikes , any decent PCI-E , ATI offerings and is there a ATI Turbocache equivalent to steer clear of?

The 6800 isn't that bad. It's way better than the 7300's or X1300's. It's about on par with a 7600 or so.

DON'T get an XT, get a GS at least.

"Quid" are english-pounds, the poster is referring to 50 english-pounds or ~$100 US dollars or ~110 CA dollars

Best cards to buy right now are nVidia 7600GT or 7950GT

I think that the best you can hope to get for £50 is a 7600 GS, and I would say that it would be preferable against a 6 series card. This one is from a brand I haven't heard of, but has 200mhz faster GDDR3 memory than the gigabyte one of a near identical GDDR2 model, for a very similar price. http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Pro [...] tID=498837 and http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Pro [...] ID=470935. The Gigabyte one uses passive cooling though, so will be quieter. Either would be a good buy, and feature shader model 3, whereas the 6 series card you mentioned only has SM 2, and an overall older chip architecture. This will mean it will be less well adapted to playing more recent games. I would go for one of those cards if I was you. Scan are a good place to use as they replaced my Seagate hard drive last year when it damaged itself and became unusable.

6800xt's overclock like crazy, I got mine to 471 core clock off 350 and memory up to 1355 from 1000, but I do not know how overclocked ones compare to newer cards. Too bad you aren't looking for an AGP card, you can unlock the pipelines in those.

I wouldnt reccomend the X1650's at all, they are really bad performance wise.

My housemate is using my old standard 6800 (12 pipelines 5 shaders) which runs all the latest games on decent settings @ 1024x768, but I think the 6800xt has the added bonus of being able to unlock to 16 pipelines + 5 shaders.

Im not sure if this is true on the PCI-E version, as it wasnt on the standard 6800 that I had.

But if it does unlock, you would essentially have a 6800 GT with slightly lower clocks.

My 6800 was able to overclock to 425/900 and was damn decent back then. That was with 800mhz Hynix DDR-1 chips. It turned out to be be very cost effective to the 6800gt, and much better then the 6600 GT that I were going to buy at the time after my 9800 xt burnt out.

For £50 though, I doubt you can get any better unless you manage to find a 7600GS.

I know you said strct budget of £50 but if you can stretch to another £6.11 then this 7600GT is up at £56.11 and would be a good purchase:

It even says its clocked at 580/750 which, if I remember correctly is overclocked from the standard 560MHz.
