i have read whats the best linux guide. but this pc is old. specs 500mhz cpu, 198mb ram 10gb hard drive i just want to try it out and might as well on an old pc thanks im thinking about LYCORIS or Redhat

maybe try Damn Small Linux or Xubuntu. You may also be able to find a list of very resource-frugal distros if you go to distrowatch.com.

Of course, if you are really hardcore, you could go with slackware, debian, or gentoo and only install whatever you deem absolutely necessary for your machine to do its thing.

The DSL live CD is about 50MB and is relatively very lightweight.

The amount of physical RAM is key! The more RAM you can stuff into your system the better!

I have had systems with 266MHz CPUs running ok with 256MB RAM or more, they are not very fast, due to the slow CPU, but they run fine.
