Lost CD Drive

Suddenly, my D drive (cd drive) is not recognised on my Toshiba Satellite 1110. I was attempting to upgrade from Windows ME to Windows XP. Yeah, I know they're old OSs but it's my third computer and I'm trying to get it to work for my granddaughter.

I've also forgotten the ME product key, so I think I'm scuppered but there may be a bright one out there who knows what I should do.

Any help greatly appreciated.

I'll gladly translate. =]

Start,
Control panel,
Administrator tools,
Device Manager,
Manage Disk Drives,
On top of the Disk Drives panel click > Properties > Activate

Sorry if it's not a 100% accurate translation, French is very different from English Grammar.
If you can get online with the computer, try to download drivers for the drive.

Thanks for the suggestion but I can find neither "Administrator Tolls" or even "Manage Disk Drives" in the Device Manager of Windows Me. Because I'm on a WLAN I cannot get this computer on line.

Make that "tools"

Google "Upper and Lower Filters". Sometimes deleting these values can restore functionality provided that the drive hasn't failed.

Tried it, doesn't work. Maybe I need a new drive (or a new laptop)
